Абстрактные существительные в английском языке. Образование абстрактных существительных

Абстрактные существительные (abstract nouns) – существительные, которые

  • нельзя увидеть
  • нельзя потрогать
  • можно воспринимать только мысленно или с помощью органов чувств

Примеры абстрактных существительных:

warmth (теплота), beauty (красота), curiosity (любопытство), weather (погода), respect (уважение)

Основные группы абстрактных существительных.

К абстрактным мы будем относить существительные, обозначающие

love (любовь), anger (злость), compassion (спокойствие), trust (доверие), despair (отчаяние), sadness (печаль), enthusiasm (энтузиазм)

  • состояния и постоянные признаки:

health (здоровье), silence (спокойствие), motherhood (материнство), honesty (честность), pain (боль)

  • абстрактные, отвлеченные понятия:

charity (благотворительность), homelessness (бездомность), violence (насилие), loyalty (верность), privacy (уединенность)

belief (верование), dream (мечта), faith (вера), thought (мысль), idea (идея)

  • природные и физические явления:

gravity (гравитация, притяжение), fire (огонь), lightning (молния), hail (град), humidity (влажность), snow (снег)

diabetes (диабет), diphtheria (дифтерия), scarlet fever (скарлатина), constipation (запор), mumps (свинка)

  • предметы и научные дисциплины

chemistry (химия), agriculture (сельское хозяйство), accounting (бухгалтерский учет), literature (литература), phonetics (фонетика), advertising (реклама)

  • разнообразные занятия, в том числе спортивные:

reading (чтение), running (бег), traveling (путешествие), dancing (танцы), smoking (курение), volleyball (волейбол), billiards (бильярд)

Абстрактные существительные используется ТОЛЬКО В ЕДИНСТВЕННОМ ЧИСЛЕ

Некоторые абстрактные существительные могут менять свое значение и переходить в разряд конкретных существительных, в этом случае они могут употребляться с неопределенным артиклем и приобретать форму множественного числа.

  • experience (опыт) — an experience (случай) — experiences (случаи);
  • work (работа) — a work (произведение) — works (произведения, труды);
  • time (время)— a time (раз) — times (разы);
  • beauty красота) — а beauty (красавица) — beauties (красавицы);
  • law (право) — a law (закон) — laws (законы);
  • sight (зрение) — a sight (взгляд) — sights (взгляды);
  • light (свет) — a light (огонек) — lights (огни) и т.д.

Способы образования абстрактных существительных.

Абстрактные существительные в английском языке чаще всего образуются при помощи следующих суффиксов:

Запомните следующие правила.

Перед каждым нарицательным существител ь ным должен стоять артикль.

Если вы не употребляете перед существител ь ным артикль, вы должны уметь объяснить, п о чему.

Артикль не употребляется, если перед существ и тельным стоит притяжательное или указател ь ное местоимение, другое существительное в притяжательном падеже, количественное числ и тельное или отрицание «по» (не «not»).

Упоминая предмет впервые, мы употребляем п е ред ним неопределенный артикль а(аn

). Упом и ная этот же предмет вторично, мы ставим п е ред ним определенный артикль the.

Неопределенный артикль a (an) может употре б ляться только с исчисляемыми существител ь ными, стоящими в единственном числе. Перед неисчисляемыми существительными или сущ е ствительными во множественном числе неопр е деленный артикль опускается. Определенный артикль the употребляется как с исчисляемыми, так и с неисчисляемыми существительными, как с единственным, так и с множественным числом.

E.g. This is a book. The book is interesting.

Если перед существительным употребляется прилагательное, оно стоит между артиклем и с у ществительным.

Часто, даже упоминая предмет впервые, мы тем j не менее употребляем перед ним определенный артикль:

а) если упоминаемый предмет является еди н ственным в мире

E.g. The sun is shining brightly.

в) если этот предмет является определенным по ситуации

E.g. Put the book on the table.

Кроме того существует огромное количество так называемых «застывших словосочетаний,» в к о торых артикль употребляется или отсутствует традиционно. Эти словосочетания приходится заучивать наизусть.

Запомните следующие конструкции.

Запомните также следующие предложения:

The (book) is on the (table). Ho: The (book) is on a little (table) 1

1 Существительное, стоящее в скобках, может быть любым. Прилагательное также может быть любым. Вместо предлога «on» может быть любой другой предлог иди заменяющее его слов о сочетание, напр, «in front of».
